Focus on Rob’s finance career at Carlson Wagonlit Travel
A work experience placement was a springboard for Robert to propel himself into a finance career at CWT
“CWT wants you to succeed and proactively encourages staff development. It’s an ambitious company and attracts ambitious people.”
In one sentence, I would describe my job as:
Interesting and rewarding; it keeps me on my toes.
The first thing I do when I get into work is:
Say hello to my colleagues and have a quick catch- up.
The best thing about working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel:
The opportunities to grow within the organisation are endless. I’m challenged everyday and it’s hard to see how anyone could ever get bored!
Top 3 highlights at Carlson Wagonlit Travel so far:
1. Winning the ‘Best Corporate Travel Agency’ Award at the Irish Travel Industry Awards with my team in 2011.
2. Being selected as one of three CWT Ireland HighFlyers (CWT’s employee award programme) in 2010 in recognition of my personal performance.
3. Getting involved with the roll-out of the e-invoicing tool. It was a really important project for CWT Ireland and is now proving very popular with our clients.
Most challenging aspect of my job:
Continually upgrading my IT skills. It’s vital that I keep up-to-date with the latest technology because the demand for more advanced data from clients and CWT management keeps growing.
My path to success goes something like this:
I have been with CWT since 2005 - I started by doing work experience as a front desk receptionist and travel consultant in the Limerick office. I then moved to Head Office in Dublin as a full-time accounts assistant, progressing quickly to accounts payable clerk in 2006. I was promoted to credit controller later that year, which is the position I currently hold. I am also taking evening classes to study for my accounting technician qualification, which I aim to complete next year.
What I’ve learnt and how I’ve developed:
- Be flexible. In order to provide the best service to clients I have to adapt to their different needs.
- Teamwork is the key to success! Realising that those around you are there to help, and asking for that help, is okay.
- Be organised. It sounds boring but it means that things get done on time. ‘Prioritise’ is a word I use every day.
My favourite/most memorable travel destination:
Perhentian Islands, Malaysia. Imagine evening beach barbecues with people from all corners of the world, eating freshly caught fish and sipping on chilled mango cocktails as the sun sets over the sea – wonderful.
When I’m not working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel, I like:
Travelling – I love seeing other countries and immersing myself in the different cultures and culinary experiences.
If you’re thinking of working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel, I’d say:
If you’re ambitious then you need to be working for the best corporate travel management company in Ireland.
“Robert loves the travel business and is able to embrace all aspects of it. He is a great asset
to CWT and I firmly believe he will climb higher and higher up the career ladder.”
