Focus on Jennifer’s travel consultant career at Carlson Wagonlit Travel

Jennifer’s travel career has taken her to the US and back, she is now a section manager at CWT Ireland. Here’s her story...

“The people I work with have made me what I am, and I’m proud of that.”

In one sentence, I would describe my job as:

Challenging and varied; the most exciting journey of my life.

The first thing I do when I get into work is:

Make a cup of tea and see if there have been any overnight disruptions or travel related issues. I then check the work load for the day and set up a plan of action with my team.

The best thing about working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel:

The ‘can do’ attitude. It’s the support of my team and the knowledge I am working for an industry leader that champions continuous training that makes it such a great place to work.

Top 3 highlights at Carlson Wagonlit Travel so far:

1 Being part of a company that won Best Corporate Agency at the Irish Travel Industry Awards in 2011.

2 Making good friends – we have a low staff turnover so I know my colleagues really well.

3 Being promoted to section manager. It was great to be recognised for my work, I felt like I’d really achieved something.

Most challenging aspect of my job:

Keeping up-to-date with all the product information in the industry. Our clients expect us to be the best and I like to rise to the challenge.

My path to success goes something like this:

I spent 12 years in customer service at Aer Lingus, 8 of which I was based in the United States. I took a career break to raise my daughters and then made my return to the travel industry with CWT. I started as a travel consultant and progressed to lead agent and then section manager. My training in aviation provides a good foundation for the job I do now.

What I’ve learnt and how I’ve developed:

Never be afraid to address an issue. A problem is just something waiting for a solution.

Life is a continuous learning curve – I’ve something to learn from all of my colleagues.

Customers are individuals who appreciate individual attention. Learning about their specific needs and preferences goes a long way!

My favourite/most memorable travel destination:

My favourite city is Boston, MA – who else but a real fan would visit every year? My heart skips a beat every time I land at my old stomping ground, Logan Airport.

When I’m not working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel, I like:

Singing with the local choir, walking my Basset Hound (Hug), and spending time cooking for friends and family. I’m also involved with an international volunteer organisation based in Lourdes which helps sick and disabled people to complete their pilgrimage.

If you’re thinking of working at Carlson Wagonlit Travel, I’d say:

You will enjoy working for a company that values your contribution and encourages you to be the best you can be.

"Jennifer always has an answer to any question I may have. She is a fountain of knowledge and can resolve any issue in a cool and calm manner. She's an effective and charismatic section manager, always optimistic and in good humour."
